During the visit of the EGN Evaluators (July 20 – 23) to the Aspiring Geopark Grevena-Tethys, our aim is to document the park area as a geoheritage site that requires international recognition for the following reasons: to preserve the unique sites of historic geologic research; to promote further geoscientific research with emphasis on the relation of geologic and exceedingly rare environmental foundations; to weave the cultural/anthropological history of the area to its geologic foundations; to develop a sustainable geotouristic attraction capable of increasing visitation, strengthening the local economy, and providing jobs in the region. We will document, as well as this short visit allows, our scientific field area, our hopes for development, and our problems.

•    The Geopark Grevena-Tethys has been divided into 5 parkland areas: each will be visited during the evaluation period and each discussed with respect to the developmental model for each parkland to fulfill the goals stated above.

•    The Geopark includes 14 areas considered as “Geowonders”. These are areas that combine geologic, geomorphologic, cultural, and historic significance at sites of unsurpassed beauty. We will attempt to visit 9 of these Geowonders during the visit.

•    There are 115 documented geosites within the Geopark area, and many more that are to be added in the near future. The Geosites that we will visit include the oldest rocks of Greece, the sites that preserve the documentation of the inception of plate tectonic theory, the geomorphologic treasures of the area, and those that combine history with geologic foundation.

•    The Geopark will showcase its “working” information centers, small geoscientific exhibits shown by local interest groups, and the sites of our in-progress geoscience and exhibit centers.

We welcome you to our Geopark. We welcome your advice and guidance.

The Geopark Grevena-Tethys is committed to ultimately achieving membership in the European and Global Geopark Network. We hope to fulfill this goal with your visit this year, or if not, to receive the guidance necessary to attain UNESCO recognized status in the future.

Thank you for your participation in achieving this goal!
